Natural Bedding Miscanthus Stall Set Up

Natural Bedding Miscanthus Stall Maintenance & Clean Up

Step 1: Set Up

We recommend that you establish a base of 3 Regular size bags or 2 Extra Large bags in a 12’ x 12’ stall. Level-set the bedding with the back side of your pitchfork to about 1-2” for the base layer.

It is important that you maintain a consistent thickness of bedding. Next, apply water lightly with a spray/mist jug. This will activate the miscanthus and allow it do what it does best - absorb! We want the base to start to “inter-lock.”

After the base layer is set, add 3-4 Regular bags or 2-3 Extra Large bags to get to the desired depth of 4-6”. Do a final leveling with the back of your pitch fork.

Step 2: Cleaning

Remove the manure daily with your pitch fork with a “side to side” sifting method vs. an “up and down” motion. After removing the of manure, level-set the stall with the back of your pitch fork.

The “wet spot” will be ready to remove every ~5-7 days. Carefully rake back the top layer of dry bedding; if the wet spot is fully saturated, it will have the color like a copper penny.

Step 3: Reset

After the wet spot has been completely removed, rake some of the existing bedding back in the area. The stall can be level-set and 1-2 Regular or Extra Large bags can be added to replenish to the 4-6” desired depth.
